The Greenest Way to Dispose Your Non-Compostable Leftovers

You're standing at the kitchen sink cleaning the dinner dishes when eco-confusion strikes: what's the greenest way to dispose of your meat scraps and other non-compostable leftovers—in the trash or garbage disposal (if you have one)?

Grinding up leftover chicken bones in the garbage disposal means sending them down the drain to be handled by your wastewater treatment facility, which requires plenty of water and energy. But dropping them in the trash means decades of slow decomposition in a landfill.

Read the answer from one of the Conservancy’s green living experts below, and don’t forget to send us your questions on any conservation subject for one of the Conservancy's 550 staff scientists. (Note: We regret that we can only answer one or two questions each month and that we cannot answer the others offline.)

Did You Know...Alkaline Foods Prevent Muscle and Bone Loss

The photos I included in this post are from the U.S. White House album revealing this years planting of the house garden with First Lady Michelle Obama. I included these because I support early education of healthy nutritional dietary habits as the First Lady is doing above. To me this is the way to prevent muscle and bone loss by forming by proper habits early on.

Practicing an alkaline diet can be a group, family or community affair. It also reduces the expense of your weekly groceries. Planting with seeds is even cheaper and yields a large harvest of produce. I encourage you to try your hand at gardening so your back yard can also act as your farmers market. Hint: Home grown produce makes the most special gift for any occasion or age.

The Truth About Alkalizing Your Blood and Tissues!

This is a wonderful discussion about Alkalizing the blood, and the importance of balancing your pH. Also, answered is the question, What is pH? Enjoy!

Washington DC Crop Hunger Walk 2012

I'm very proud and love that my sister Malinda Dix-Hunt put forth a successful CROP Hunger Walk for 2012. I'm certain the group is still accepting donations from anyone who would like to contribute.

I was thrilled to be a part of the hunger walk.  In the midst of my own financial stresses it was a relief to think of someone else ... to help someone in my community with one of their most basic needs, hunger!

By myself, ending World Hunger seemed a daunting task.  But gathered together in Southwest I learned that we helped make a difference for those less fortunate in our community by participating in the DC Crop Hunger Walk on Saturday, May 5, at the Christ United Methodist Church (4th and I Streets SW).

We met representatives of Martha's Table and Hunger Revolution and found that there were other ways to get involved in the struggle to end hunger than fund raising.  I was concerned that I had not trained for the walk, it was only a few miles (2-3) but my husband came along to make sure that I was both encouraged and protected.  He and another friend kept me company and I finished the walk with others.  There was only one injury ... a trip and fall on the side walk but she was able to,  with God grace, finish the walk with us.

I am going to do this again and you can go online if you desire to donate to support this effort on my page, go to Ending Hunger One Step at a Time.  You'll feel good about it.
