Dr. Oz: The National Childhood Obesity Crisis

As a father and a physician, I am thrilled to see the Obama administration addressing one of the most pressing issues for the next generation – the fight against childhood obesity. Michelle Obama’s initiative has made big headlines, bringing light to this urgent national crisis.

The statistics are shocking. Childhood obesity has nearly tripled in prevalence in the last 30 years. The extensive list of complications facing children who suffer from obesity includes diabetes, abnormal cholesterol, high blood pressure, asthma and sleep disorders. Even more frightening is the fact that these conditions are likely to follow children into their adult lives. The fat cells that children deposit at young ages stay with them as they grow. This means that extraneous fat cells will be impossible to remove and will burden these children for the rest of their lives.

On my show we welcome a young girl who is heading down that dangerous road. Lillie is 4 years old and weighs 85 lbs. We sit down with her parents, Heather and Mike, and discuss the emotional issues that attribute to Lillie’s obesity. We lay out an action plan that focuses on making wellness a family affair. The example that Heather and Mike set as parents is essential to Lillie developing healthy eating habits.

Like so many, Heather, Mike and Lillie were struggling with these issues privately. However, there are some who battle weight and obesity under public scrutiny. We welcome pop singer and TV personality, Carnie Wilson. Carnie’s struggle with food began when she was only 4 years old. At such a young age, she was already dealing with sugar cravings. As her children grow, Carnie senses the urgency to take back her health.

The fight to end childhood obesity begins with adults. If you feel like your child may be obese talk to a pediatrician. They can map out an individualized weight assessment and if necessary, work with you to create a personal treatment plan. A healthy family is a blessing that comes with responsibility, as a nation, we need to step up.

Thank you!—as this outpouring of support is a tremendous blessing to our entire team.

9/11 Memorial

Today we remember those taken from us on 9/11. Although it has been ten years, for many it feels as though it was just yesterday.

The beauty, if you don't mind, of 9/11 is the outpouring of love to those who lost someone that day, the unity shown amongst US citizens everywhere, and compassion that poured in from countries around the world immediately following the horror. To me the United States felt like one big neighborhood of family members, not spanning a great distance. I believe that was also in part to the strong expression of unity that arose from Manhattans Ground Zero, the Pentagon, and Shanksville that day. A monument of lights beamed where the Twin Towers stood for evenings to follow, giving everyone time to reflect and consider how to move forward. The process of healing has been long and rough for so many. My respect, love and admiration goes out to all the survivors, responders, military and others of 9/11. I look forward to visiting the monument to pay my respects in person when I come home to New York. God bless you all, and God bless America.

Developing Healthy Habits

All chatter and party lines aside, I hope all of you will be encouraged by some of the progress being made throughout the country as it relates to Childhood Obesity in America. I also pray you will be concerned about the presence of this issue in our society.

Planting "Three Sisters"

If you are like me you probably already planted your garden, but did you plant the "Three Sisters"? Planting Three Sisters (Corn, Squash and beans) is a sure way to get a harvest. They grow well together. Together they develop a system of support that causes them to thrive. “Three Sisters” traditional Native American planting technique grows crops in a mutually beneficial manner: the corn provides a structure for the beans to climb, eliminating the need for poles; the beans provide the soil with nitrogen that the other plants use; and the squash spreads along the ground, blocking the sunlight and preventing weeds. To build on the strength of this tradition, and to address the obesity health crisis that young American Indians and Alaska Natives are facing, the Obama Administration has formed the interagency collaboration, Let’s Move! in Indian Country. Participants include representatives from the First Lady’s Let’s Move! initiative, the White House Domestic Policy Council, the Departments of the Interior, Agriculture, Health and Human Services, and Education. Informed by research and recommendations in the President’s Childhood Obesity Task Force Report, Let’s Move! in Indian Country has set the four main goals mentioned earlier.
 

Let’s Move! initiative will be building upon many important efforts that are already being made in Indian Country to address the crisis of childhood obesity. Government alone cannot solve the obesity problem and reach the goal of ending the epidemic of obesity in a generation. The concept is 

1. To support and leverage Indian Country’s help, expertise, and commitment on the ground 
2. To support public/private sector partnerships that will further support and expand upon the great work happening throughout Indian Country. 

Each tribe is unique, so tribal leaders will be involved to ensure Let’s Move! in Indian Country will succeed. The initiative will work in accordance with the tribes to reduce childhood obesity and related conditions so that Native youth can grow, thrive and meet their full potential in life.

So you may be asking, what does any of this have to do with Drink Your Greens and Minerals, or Botanical Balance. Well, this strikes a cord in a topic I am quite passionate about: Nutrition, wellness, and our quality of life; Healing families, individuals, children and our nation. 

There really is no reason for Americans to be as challenged as we are in the area of our health. We have the means, research, and the technology to help provide a higher quality of life for ourselves. "Being well" never should have become an after thought. The well being of our children should never have been compromised, and certainly not on this scale...no pun intended.

Please allow me to continue speaking frankly, but it's crazy that in the 21st century children don't know how to cook from scratch. -Who removed home economics. The average American does not plant (or pot) 10 edible items in their garden, children die as young teenagers from obesity, others diagnosed with diabetes. -Enough already.
